When the mass Confederate attempt at Fort Donelson failed, he led most of his men through the lines and then directed guard during the retreat from Nashville. At The Battle Of Shiloh there was little opportunity for the effective use of the mounted troops and his command again formed the rear guard on reatreat. The day after the Battle Of Shiloh he was wounded.

Joining up with Joseph Wheeler, Forrest took part in the unsuccesful attack on Fort Donelson which turned out in Nathan swearing he would never serve under General Wheeler ever again. He was among the Commanders of Beauregard to make the last assault in blackness against Ulysses Grant position above the river. During Grants VicksBurg campaign, Nathan's men attacked the North's supply depots and Grants lines of communcation. His carrer endend at Parker's crossroad in Tennessee on December 31,1862. At the Battke Of Chickamuga was a big victory for the South. in North Georgia in September 1863, Forrest's horsemen were among the first to Intercept with the first clash with the Federals Of Major General William S. Rosecrans army. For his great actions at the Battle Of Nashville he was ranked up to Lieutenant general on February 28, 1865. With General John Bell Hoods defeat, Forrest had to defend Northern Mississippi and Alabama.
